Graphic:Welcome to Sheringdale
SHERINGDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL, STANDEN ROAD, WANDSWORTH, LONDON SW18 5TR, UK. HEADTEACHER: MRS FIONA MORGAN, B ED(HONS)

Photo of school football team Football stars Well done to the Sheringdale Football Team on a great season that saw them perform very creditably in inter-school competitions and matches, and also – arguably more important still – improved beyond measure over the course of the season. It's a shame in a way that they'll never represent Sheringdale as a team again, but on the other hand they have laid the foundations of a very promising winter when football starts again next term.

NUT strike Sheringdale will be open as usual on Thursday. Mrs Morgan, the headteacher, reports that although some teachers will be joining the nation-wide industrial action called for that day, and that the timetable may be disrupted, there will not be enough staff absent to warrant closing the school.

Photo of play equipmen Wall to wall fun Thanks to the fund-raising zeal of the Sheringdale School Association, the junior playground has just been upgraded with a climbing wall and jungle gym over a reassuringly safe surface of bark chips. As you can see, the project comes with a free rainbow, too – though unfortunately that seems to have been tipped over already.

Photo of healthy schools activities Healthy New Year! The Spring term got off to a flying start last week, with two days devoted to the Healthy Schools initiative. This as you know is a government scheme to ensure long and healthy lives by persuading children to eat all the right things and then – just in case, presumably – have them rush outside and burn it all off again. Pictured here we see one class learning to prepare sandwiches both nutritious and tasty, while outside Mrs Bellak leads the infants in stretching and warm-up exercises, and for good measure shows them a good way to reduce their carbon footprints.

Happy New Baby Des Nunes gave birth to a bonny 7lb 7oz son on Wednesday January 2nd. Congratulations to her and Sean on their joyful start to 2008.

New Governors Sheringdale has two governors-elect. When votes were counted last week, a narrow majority was found to favour Julia Durrant and Philip Turner for the two places held by Jane Anghelatos and Paul Martin, whose terms of office exire at the end of this month. Congratulations to the winners and commiserations to the vanquished. Plus a big thank-you to Paul and Jane for all their hard work on the Governing Body – Paul, in particular, has been an extremely active and effective ICT Governor, steering the school through some very tricky decisions and dealings over the past few years. It is safe to say that without his expertise and unstinting support, the switch to the ICT Suite might still not have happened.

Photo of bike shed Wheel life The new bicycle and scooter sheds were installed earlier this term – though somehow the word "shed" doesn't quite do justice to the rather nifty structure by the hall.

Governor election Parents, don't forget: ballots have to be in by noon tomorrow (Tuesday) to be counted in the current Parent Governor election, in which five candidates are contesting the two vacancies that arise at the end of this month.

Des Nunes, Primary Strategy Leader for Mathematics, is on maternity leave as of last Friday. We wish her and her husband Sean a safe delivery and a very merry Christmas...
