SHERINGDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL

PSHE

In this section...

What does PSHE look like at Sheringdale?

At Sheringdale, personal development is at the heart of our whole school ethos. We aim to promote and nurture happy, healthy young people who have the knowledge, academic achievement and strength of character to lead safe and successful lives in modern Britain, preparing them for their next steps in education or employment with a thirst for lifelong learning. We encourage all pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life through school councils, fundraising events and involvement in community activities. Our pupils are given opportunities in PSHE lessons and assemblies to develop confidence, self-motivation and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.

We teach PSHE in a variety of ways: as a discrete subject, via assemblies, within other subjects such as RE, History, Geography, Literacy and Science, as well as through educational visits and community work. Children are encouraged to celebrate diversity and differences, be inclusive, listen to others, share their own opinions and follow British Values through all of these opportunities, as well as in everyday life.

In PSHE, we follow the Jigsaw scheme where the child is at the centre of all we do. This is a mindful approach, bringing together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive and progressive scheme of learning. Our aim is to ensure children are able to develop into the most social, emotional, moral, spiritual and resilient young people that they can be. Through the core programmes, children learn the language, vocabulary and techniques that enable them to build their confidence and ‘emotional repertoire’.

Jigsaw is sequential, the six puzzles (units) starting with 'Being Me in My World' (BM) at the beginning of the school year and working through to the end of the year:

  1. Being Me in My World
'Who am I and how do I fit?'
  2. Celebrating Difference
Respect for similarity and difference. Anti-bullying and being unique
  3. Dreams and Goals
Aspirations, how to achieve goals and understanding the emotions that go with this
  4. Healthy Me
Being and keeping safe and healthy
  5. Relationships
    Building positive, healthy relationships
  6. Changing Me
    Coping positively with change

PSHE assembly takes place weekly and gives the children opportunities to discuss themes linked to PSHE, discuss special days and celebrations, discuss morality, celebrate differences and diversity, discuss British Values and share their own beliefs by participating in debates and discussions

We are an eco-friendly school and children take great pride in keeping their learning environment and the wider community clean, with the understanding of why this is important for sustainability.

 School Council

Every year the elected School Council team work together to bring fresh ideas and improvements to our school environment. They meet regularly to discuss ideas and listen to each other’s viewpoints about issues within the school. The school council look forward to getting involved with a range of school issues and events over the coming year. Watch this space!
