Sheringdale Primary School Governing Body
Sheringdale's Governing Body has overall responsibility for the general direction of the school. It sets and monitors the school's budget; agrees and adopts policies on such topics as homework, behaviour and equal opportunities; manages the upkeep of the premises; monitors delivery of the National Curriculum; looks at the school's results at Key Stages 1 and 2 and sets targets for the future; reviews how the school deals with special needs; approves the annual school development plan; and makes suggestions on improvements for the future.
Neither individual governors nor the Governing Body as a whole are involved in the day-to-day running of the school, as this is the Head's responsibility. Nor have they any direct say in how teaching takes place, as that is a professional job. They do not supervise staff nor take part in discussions about individual children, except in special circumstances that require action by governors such as exclusions from school.
The Governing Body has a formal meeting each term, but much of the work is done by
sub-committees, each of which must also meet at least once a term. However,
additional meetings may be held as necessary. The sub-committees are:
Finance and Premises
Curriculum and Policy
Personnel Procedures
Governors of state schools hold their authority by legal mandate; their responsibilities are defined by statute and overseen by the local authority (in our case, Wandsworth Borough Council). In addition, the composition of the governing body is prescribed by law, and is linked to the size of the school. Sheringdale's Governing Body consists of five parent governors, three governors appointed by the local authority, three staff governors (the Head automatically, plus one elected by the teaching staff and one by the support staff), and three community governors (members of the local community invited to serve on the governing body and known once upon a time as co-opted governors), making a total of 14. The Governing Body can also invite distinguished individuals in exceptional circumstances to serve as Associate Members, with the right to attend meetings, sit on sub-committees and take part in discussion, but not to vote or hold office.
